What Is K Rend?

K Rend is a range of silicone-enhanced exterior renders manufactured by Kilwaughter Minerals in Northern Ireland. The company has been producing rendering products since 1979 and has grown to become one of the most recognised render brands in the UK and Ireland. K Rend products are used on everything from individual homes to large housing developments and commercial buildings.

What sets K Rend apart from traditional sand and cement render and standard monocouche products is the addition of silicone to the formulation. This silicone content gives the finished render surface hydrophobic properties - meaning water beads on the surface and runs off rather than being absorbed. This creates a self-cleaning effect where rainfall naturally washes away surface dirt, dust and organic growth.

Lee on starting with K Rend

I picked up K Rend on the job rather than through a formal manufacturer training course. Once you’ve done a few, you understand how the system wants to be applied, and you carry that knowledge across to monocouche and silicone systems generally. The science behind it isn’t complicated, but the application discipline matters: use the manufacturer’s own mesh and beads, follow the base coat thickness, and don’t skip stages. Skip a stage and you lose the guarantee.

The K Rend Product Range

K Rend is not a single product but a family of renders and ancillary products designed to work together as a complete system. The main finishing products include:

K Rend Silicone TC (Thin Coat)

The most widely used K Rend product. Silicone TC is a thin-coat (3-6mm), through-coloured finishing render applied over a prepared base coat. It is available in a scraped or textured finish and comes in the full K Rend colour range. This is the product most commonly specified for domestic re-renders and new builds across East Kent.

K Rend Silicone FT (Float Finish)

A thicker (15-20mm) one-coat render that is applied directly onto masonry and finished with a float to a smoother texture. Silicone FT combines the base coat and finishing coat into one application, making it faster to apply on suitable backgrounds. It offers a more traditional rendered appearance with a sponge-float or scraped texture.

K Rend Silicone K1

A premium thin-coat finish with a finer texture than Silicone TC. K1 produces a smoother, more refined appearance and is popular for contemporary-style homes and commercial projects where a clean, modern look is wanted.

K Rend HP12 Base Coat

The dedicated base coat in the K Rend system, applied to a thickness of 8-12mm before the thin-coat finishes. HP12 provides a level, keyed surface for the finishing coat and incorporates reinforcing mesh to reduce the risk of cracking.

Lee on K Rend finishes

I prefer the silicone finish over the scraped finish. The silicone finish is rubbed and flattened, so it ends up more sealed, less porous, and that means it sheds water better and stays cleaner. Scraping the surface, which gives that more textured look, opens the material up and lets dirt and algae get a grip more easily. Customers are going for the brighter colours at the moment, grey and white especially. The silicone finish suits those colours, you get a cleaner-looking wall that stays looking clean.

Why Choose K Rend?

Self-Cleaning Properties

The silicone content in K Rend is what distinguishes it from cement-only render systems. Water does not soak into the surface but instead forms droplets that roll down the face of the render, carrying dirt particles with them. Over time, rainfall keeps the surface clean without any intervention. This is particularly valuable in East Kent, where coastal properties face exposure to salt spray, wind-blown grime and algae growth.

Through-Coloured, No Painting

Like monocouche, K Rend is through-coloured so there is no requirement for masonry paint. The colour is consistent throughout the full depth of the render, meaning chips, scratches and minor damage do not reveal a different colour underneath. With over 125 standard colours available, there is a shade to suit any property style.

Breathable

Despite being hydrophobic on the surface, K Rend allows moisture vapour to pass through from inside the wall to outside. This breathability is important for the building’s health - it prevents moisture from becoming trapped within the wall structure, which can lead to damp and deterioration.

Flexibility and Crack Resistance

Silicone renders are inherently more flexible than rigid cement-based renders. This flexibility allows K Rend to accommodate minor building movement without cracking. When combined with the reinforcing mesh embedded in the base coat, the result is a render system with excellent crack resistance - a significant advantage over traditional sand and cement render.

Colour Stability

K Rend uses high-quality, UV-stable pigments that resist fading from sunlight exposure. The colour of a K Rend finish after 10 or 15 years will be very close to the colour when it was first applied. This is a marked improvement over masonry paint, which can fade noticeably within just two or three years.

Lee on what customers notice

The thing customers value most is not having to paint. Once it’s on, it’s on, and they’re not looking at a repaint every five years. That saves the cost of paint, the cost of scaffolding to repaint, and the hassle. The other thing they notice is the colour stays true. Painted render fades, often within a couple of years, and people don’t realise how much until they see new render next to old. K Rend keeps its colour because the pigment goes all the way through.

Our K Rend Application Process

1. Preparation and Assessment

Every K Rend project starts with a thorough assessment of the existing walls. We check for:

  • Structural integrity and any signs of movement
  • Condition of existing render (if present) - is it sound or does it need removing?
  • Damp or water ingress issues that need resolving first
  • Condition of window sills, lintels, copings and other details that interface with the render

All failed render is removed, and the masonry surface is cleaned and prepared. We fix stainless steel beading to all external corners, window and door reveals, bellcast edges and stop points.

2. Base Coat Application

K Rend HP12 base coat is applied to a thickness of 8-12mm. While the base coat is still wet, alkali-resistant reinforcing mesh is embedded into the surface. This mesh spans the full wall area and is overlapped at joins to create a continuous reinforcement layer. The mesh reinforcement is what gives the K Rend system its crack-resistant performance.

3. Finishing Coat

Once the base coat has cured (typically a minimum of 24-48 hours), the K Rend finishing coat is applied. For Silicone TC, this is a thin coat of 3-6mm applied with a steel trowel. The render is left to firm up and is then scraped with a plastic or stainless steel scraper to achieve the characteristic textured finish.

4. Detailing

Proper detailing around windows, doors, pipes, vents and other penetrations is essential for both appearance and long-term performance. We use K Rend’s own profile beads and accessories to ensure clean, weathertight junctions at all interfaces.

Lee on a typical K Rend job

A typical whole-house K Rend job runs two to three weeks depending on the size and whether the old render needs hacking off. Day one is prep, scaffolding’s already up, beads going on, mesh ready. Days two to four is the base coat and getting the mesh embedded properly across the whole wall. Then you let it cure properly, that’s not optional. After that, the silicone finish goes on, and that’s the skill bit. The finish has to be applied evenly and worked at the right time, too early and it tears, too late and it won’t trowel out properly. Then it’s a question of weather. Rain is the enemy of fresh render, so I’ll always tell customers from day one that we’ll have to pause if the weather turns.

K Rend Across East Kent

K Rend is an excellent choice for many East Kent properties, particularly:

  • Coastal homes in Deal, Dover, Folkestone, Ramsgate and Margate, where the self-cleaning properties are especially valuable against salt and weather exposure
  • 1960s and 70s properties with tired, painted render that needs replacing with a modern, low-maintenance system
  • Extensions and additions where a high-quality render finish is wanted to match or upgrade the existing house
  • New builds and self-builds where long-term appearance and low maintenance are priorities

For period and listed properties, particularly in Canterbury’s conservation areas, K Rend is not usually the appropriate choice. These buildings typically require a lime-based render that is more sympathetic to the original construction. We always advise honestly on the right render for the building.

K Rend vs Monocouche

Both are through-coloured, maintenance-free render systems, but they differ in important ways:

The choice often comes down to budget and priorities. K Rend costs more but offers self-cleaning performance and a wider colour palette. Monocouche is a solid, proven system at a lower price point. We discuss both options with our customers and help them make the right choice for their property.

Lee on K Rend vs monocouche

I work with both, and I’m comfortable applying either system. Personally I lean towards monocouche, mainly because I do more of it and I know the product inside out. I had a patchy result with K Rend on a bungalow a few years back, and even though that was likely down to the specific batch, it stuck with me. For monocouche I recommend Weber. The main selling point I give customers for either system is the same: no painting. Beyond that, it’s about colour choice and budget. The right answer depends on the wall and the customer, not on a blanket preference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes K Rend different from standard render?
K Rend is a silicone-enhanced render, meaning it contains silicone additives that make the surface hydrophobic (water-repellent). Rain hits the surface and sheets off rather than soaking in. This self-cleaning effect washes away dirt and algae, keeping the render looking fresh for years. Unlike standard render, K Rend is through-coloured and does not need painting.
Does K Rend really clean itself?
The silicone in K Rend creates a hydrophobic surface that causes rainwater to bead and run off, taking loose dirt and dust with it. It is not a magic solution - heavy algae growth or ingrained staining may still need manual cleaning - but in normal conditions, a K Rend finish stays noticeably cleaner than a painted render surface, especially in East Kent where regular rainfall does the work.
How long does K Rend last?
K Rend is designed to last the lifetime of the building with minimal maintenance. The manufacturer states a service life of 25 years minimum, and many installations from the early 2000s are still performing well. Unlike painted render, there is no paint layer to deteriorate, and the silicone properties that give the self-cleaning effect remain active throughout the render's life.
What colours does K Rend come in?
K Rend offers over 125 colours in their standard range, from traditional whites, creams and stone tones to contemporary greys, greens and darker shades. Custom colours can also be produced to order. We recommend choosing your colour based on sample panels applied on your wall, as render colours can look quite different on a building compared with a small swatch.
Is K Rend suitable for all types of property?
K Rend is suitable for most modern and mid-century properties with masonry walls (brick, block, concrete). It is not ideal for older period properties built before 1919 with solid walls, where a more breathable lime-based render is usually more appropriate. We assess each property and recommend the best render system for the building.
Can K Rend be applied over existing render?
K Rend is designed to be applied onto masonry backgrounds. While it can sometimes be applied over sound, well-bonded existing render using a suitable key coat, K Rend themselves recommend application onto a prepared masonry surface for the best long-term performance. We always advise removing failed render before applying K Rend.
What is the K Rend system approach?
K Rend is not just a single product - it is a complete system. It includes a base coat (K Rend Primer HP2 or KAM), reinforcing mesh, and the finishing coat. Using the full system ensures compatibility between layers and allows K Rend to offer their product guarantee. We always apply the full K Rend system as specified.
Does K Rend come with a guarantee?
K Rend products carry a manufacturer's guarantee when applied by an experienced applicator following their specifications. The specific guarantee terms depend on the product used and the project. We provide our own workmanship guarantee in addition to any manufacturer's guarantee.
