Plastering and Rendering Services in Canterbury

Canterbury is one of England’s most historic cities, and its buildings reflect centuries of architectural evolution. Perfect Plastering is proud to serve Canterbury and the surrounding area, bringing specialist plastering skills to a city where quality and sensitivity to heritage really matter.

Located just 25 minutes from our Broadstairs base, Canterbury is a regular destination for our team. The city’s mix of medieval timber-framed buildings, Georgian townhouses, Victorian terraces, and modern developments means we’re called upon for an enormous variety of plastering work, from delicate restoration to large-scale commercial projects.

Lee on working in Canterbury

A lot of Canterbury properties are older Victorian or heritage-style homes, so lime plastering and breathable materials matter more there than they do in new builds. Rough pricing in the Canterbury area usually looks like small repair patches at £100 to £250, single room skims at £300 to £700, ceiling skims at £250 to £500, full room replasters at £600 to £1,500-plus, and external rendering often £2,000-plus depending on size. I haven’t done much heritage or listed work in Canterbury itself, my heritage experience is more concentrated in Sandwich and the surrounding villages, but the principles transfer. Right materials for the right building, lime where it should be lime, and don’t trap moisture in a wall that was designed to breathe.

Canterbury’s Unique Architectural Demands

Canterbury presents plastering challenges that you simply don’t find in most towns. The city’s long history and its status as a major heritage destination mean that many properties require specialist approaches:

  • Listed buildings - Canterbury has a significant number of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings. Plastering work on listed properties must use approved materials and techniques, and may require listed building consent. We have experience navigating these requirements
  • Medieval and Tudor structures - timber-framed buildings with wattle and daub or lath and plaster walls need specialist repair using traditional materials, typically lime-based plasters
  • Georgian and Regency properties - elegant townhouses with fine plasterwork, decorative cornicing, and period detailing that demands careful restoration
  • University properties - Canterbury is home to three universities, generating demand for plastering in student accommodation, academic buildings, and the surrounding rental properties

Lee on listed buildings in Canterbury

My listed building work has tended to be in Sandwich, on Victoria Terrace, rather than central Canterbury, but the approach is identical. Original materials, traditional techniques, and lime where the building wants lime. For the more specialist heritage work like ornate cornice restoration on listed buildings and churches, I work with a specialist within the Perfect Plastering team who handles that side. Conservation officers want to see the right materials specified up front, so the process is more involved than a standard job, but it’s the right way to protect a building that’s stood for hundreds of years.

Working with Heritage Properties

Canterbury’s heritage is its greatest asset, and any plastering work on historic buildings must respect and preserve that heritage. This isn’t just about aesthetics - using the wrong materials on an old building can cause serious structural and damp problems.

We use lime plaster and lime render on pre-1919 buildings wherever appropriate. Lime is the traditional building material for these properties, and it allows walls to manage moisture in the way they were designed to. Modern gypsum plaster and cement renders can trap moisture in old walls, leading to damp, salt crystallisation, and even structural damage over time.

For listed buildings, we understand the planning requirements and can work with your architect or conservation officer to ensure all work meets the necessary standards. We document our work and use materials that are consistent with the building’s period and construction.

Lee on lime plastering for heritage

I’m self-taught on lime, picked it up on the job over the years working on older properties where lime was the only right answer. I use NHL lime bags for the rendering work and I follow the historic methods because they work. Lime needs about eight weeks to cure properly, and during that time the customer’s been told not to touch it or paint it. It’s a slower trade than modern plastering, and you can’t rush it, which is part of the appeal. The buildings deserve the patience.
