What Is K Rend? A Complete Guide for Homeowners
If you’ve been looking into external rendering for your property, you’ve almost certainly come across K Rend. It’s one of the most popular render systems in the UK, and for good reason. But what exactly is it, how does it differ from traditional render, and is it right for your home? This guide covers everything you need to know.
Lee on K Rend by name
K Rend gets asked for by name regularly because the brand is well known and customers have seen it on other properties. I do work with both K Rend and monocouche, and they’re often interchangeable for the customer. My honest preference is monocouche, specifically Weber, because I’ve done more of it and I had a patchy result with K Rend on a bungalow once that stuck with me. But both are good products, both are through-coloured, both eliminate the painting cost. If a customer asks for K Rend specifically, I’ll apply K Rend. If they’re open to either, I’ll often steer them towards Weber monocouche.
K Rend: The Basics
K Rend is a brand name for a range of silicone-enhanced renders manufactured by Kilwaughter Minerals in Northern Ireland. The company has been producing render products since the 1960s, and K Rend has become one of the most widely specified render systems in the UK construction industry.
The key feature of K Rend is that it’s through-coloured - the colour is mixed into the render itself, rather than painted on afterwards. This means the finish doesn’t peel, chip, or fade in the same way that painted render can, and there’s no need for regular repainting.
K Rend is also silicone-enhanced, which gives it excellent water repellency while remaining breathable. Water beads on the surface rather than soaking in, but moisture vapour from inside the building can still pass through. This balance of weather protection and breathability makes it particularly well-suited to the UK climate.
Benefits of K Rend
Low Maintenance
Once applied, K Rend requires very little maintenance. The through-coloured finish eliminates the need for repainting (a significant saving over the life of the render), and the silicone content helps the surface resist dirt and algae.
Weather Resistance
K Rend’s silicone content makes it highly resistant to rain penetration. For coastal properties in Kent, where driving rain is a constant challenge, this is a significant advantage over traditional sand and cement render.
Breathability
Despite its water resistance, K Rend allows water vapour to pass through the render. This breathability helps prevent moisture from being trapped within the wall, reducing the risk of damp and maintaining a healthy building envelope.
Crack Resistance
K Rend has a degree of flexibility that rigid cement renders lack. This flexibility helps it accommodate minor building movement without cracking, extending its lifespan and maintaining its appearance.
Colour Choice
K Rend is available in a wide range of colours, from traditional whites and creams to more contemporary greys and charcoals. The through-coloured finish means the colour is consistent and long-lasting.
Proven Track Record
K Rend has been in use for decades and has a strong reputation in the UK construction industry. It’s backed by BBA certification and comes with a manufacturer’s warranty.
Lee on the biggest advantage
The single biggest advantage of K Rend or any silicone-enhanced render is the water repellency. Water beads on the surface and runs off rather than soaking in, and that’s why it stays cleaner and resists algae better than a standard cement render. For coastal East Kent properties facing the weather year-round, that matters. Combine that with the through-colouring so there’s no painting, and over a 20 to 25 year lifespan you’re spending significantly less on maintenance than you would on a painted sand and cement render.
K Rend Products
K Rend offers several products within its range, each suited to different applications:
K Rend Silicone TC (Thin Coat)
The most popular K Rend product. Applied as a thin finishing coat over a basecoat, typically 3-6mm thick. Available in scraped and textured finishes.
K Rend Silicone FT (Float and Trowel)
A thicker application that produces a smoother, more traditional rendered finish. Often chosen for properties where a contemporary flat render appearance is desired.
K Rend Silicone Dash Receiver
Designed specifically as a base for pebble dash finishes. Provides a consistent base that accepts aggregate evenly.
K Rend K1 Spray
A spray-applied render for larger commercial and residential projects. Faster application than hand-applied products.
K Rend Colours
One of K Rend’s selling points is its colour range. Popular colours in Kent include:
- White and off-white tones - classic and timeless
- Cream and champagne shades - warm and traditional
- Pearl grey and silver grey - contemporary and popular on modern properties
- Mocha and sandstone - earthy tones that suit rural properties
Colour charts are available from K Rend, and we can help you choose a colour that suits your property and its surroundings. If your property is in a conservation area, it’s worth checking whether there are restrictions on external colours before making your choice.
Lee on popular colours
Grey and white are the colours customers are choosing most at the moment. The pearl greys and silver greys especially have become the default for anyone wanting a modern look, and bright whites still get picked for properties that want a clean, classic appearance. The warmer tones like sandstone and mocha come up on rural and country properties where customers want the render to blend with the surroundings. The shift towards brighter, cleaner colours has been steady over the last few years.
K Rend Costs
K Rend is a premium product, and it costs more than traditional sand and cement render. However, when you factor in the elimination of painting costs over the render’s lifetime, the overall cost of ownership is often comparable or better.
Typical K Rend Pricing
- Supply and installation - typically £50 to £80 per square metre (including basecoat and finish coat)
- Semi-detached house - approximately £5,000 to £9,000 for a complete K Rend finish
- Detached house - approximately £7,000 to £14,000 for a complete K Rend finish
These figures include preparation, basecoat, and K Rend finish coat. Scaffolding is additional and typically ranges from £500 to £2,000 depending on the property.
Long-Term Value
Traditional sand and cement render needs repainting every 5-10 years, at a typical cost of £1,000 to £3,000 per repaint. Over 25 years, this adds up to significant additional expense. K Rend’s through-coloured finish eliminates this cost entirely.
K Rend Maintenance
While K Rend is low maintenance, it’s not entirely maintenance-free:
- Annual inspection - check for any cracks, chips, or areas where the render may have been damaged
- Cleaning - an annual wash with clean water and a soft brush removes any accumulated dirt or algae. For stubborn staining, specialist render cleaning products are available
- Algae prevention - north-facing and shaded walls may develop algae growth over time. This is cosmetic rather than structural and can be treated with algae-killing products
- Repairs - minor damage can be repaired by a skilled renderer, though colour matching can be challenging on weathered surfaces
Lee on maintenance
The main thing customers need to know is that K Rend isn’t entirely maintenance-free, but it’s close. A wash with clean water and a soft brush once a year keeps it looking fresh, and on shaded or north-facing walls you may see some algae developing over time, which is cosmetic and can be cleaned off with a specialist render cleaner. The common issue I see post-installation is when customers try to power-wash the render and damage it, the surface is robust but it’s not bullet-proof, so soft brushing and clean water is the right approach.
K Rend vs Other Render Types
K Rend vs Sand and Cement
Sand and cement is cheaper upfront but needs painting, cracks more easily, and is less water-resistant. K Rend costs more initially but saves on maintenance and typically lasts longer.
K Rend vs Monocouche
Monocouche renders are also through-coloured and applied in a single coat, making them faster to install. K Rend (particularly the TC range) is generally considered to offer superior water resistance and a wider colour range.
K Rend vs Lime Render
Lime render is the appropriate choice for period and listed buildings where maximum breathability is needed. K Rend is breathable but not to the same degree as lime. For post-1919 properties with cavity walls, K Rend is usually the better choice.
K Rend vs Acrylic Render
Acrylic renders are thin-coat systems often used over external insulation. They’re flexible and colourful but may not be as durable as K Rend in exposed locations.
Is K Rend Right for Your Property?
K Rend is an excellent choice for most modern and mid-century properties in Kent. It’s particularly well-suited to:
- Properties with cavity walls
- Coastal and exposed properties where weather resistance is important
- Homeowners who want a low-maintenance, long-lasting finish
- Properties where a contemporary, clean appearance is desired
It may not be the best choice for:
- Listed buildings or properties in conservation areas where lime render is required
- Very old solid-walled properties where maximum breathability is essential
- Properties on a very tight budget where sand and cement offers a lower upfront cost
Lee on when to choose something else
If you’ve got a listed building, a property in a conservation area, or anything pre-1919 with solid walls that need to breathe, I’d steer you away from K Rend and towards lime render. Lime is breathable, it’s softer than the brick so it acts as a sacrificial layer, and it’s the historically correct choice for those buildings. K Rend on a solid-walled Victorian property risks trapping moisture and causing damp problems inside. The other situation where I’d steer differently is if budget is the main concern, sand and cement is the cheapest system, and on a property where the customer plans to repaint anyway, you don’t necessarily need the through-coloured premium.
